Malawi

TWAM started its work in Malawi in 2022 with the first container of 700 toolkits sent in January 2024. It arrived in May, and over the course of several weeks was painstakingly unpacked and given to the tool applicants amidst much ceremony - including a speech by the local MP!
We are currently identifying community groups, churches and projects we can support with tools. These groups will offer skills training and tools to some of the most vulnerable people in Malawi, along with hundreds of unemployed young people and school dropouts. We send at least one container of toolkits to Malawi a year.
Our Malawian Partner, Livingway Education, is an NGO focused on poverty alleviation and education, particularly vocational skills and Christian-based learning. They work with TWAM to ensure applicants are supported through every stage of their application up to receiving their tools and assessing their impact.

Story - KINDLE
Founded in 2000, KINDLE is a Malawi-based charity that works alongside communities to support vulnerable children and families without separating them from their roots. What began as food support from a Canadian family has grown into a locally led organisation focused on long-term, community-driven change.
KINDLE's work is built around four pillars. Health is delivered through a community clinic serving around 30,000 people each year. Education support spans from preschool to university, working with communities to strengthen schools, support teachers, provide learning materials, and ensure children stay in school during times of famine. KINDLE has also built a local primary school and supports 17-22 university students annually.
In 2020, KINDLE launched a vocational training centre for young people who have left school. Offering government-approved, TEVETA-certified courses in trades such as solar, carpentry, tailoring, and bricklaying, training is 75% practical and inclusive of parents with young children.
With tools from TWAM, KINDLE strengthens families caring for orphans with agricultural training, food security initiatives, parenting support, and environmental restoration. Today, KINDLE employs around 42 staff and is led by Malawian leadership, ensuring sustainable, locally owned impact.
Apply for tools
We do not charge for specific tools or tool kits, but we do ask that you contribute a small amount towards the UK cost of collecting, refurbishing and packing the tools we send to Africa.
The Online Application form below will show you the cost of the tools you are applying for. Before completing your application, please think about the cost and whether you can afford it. If you cannot, please reduce the number of tools you are applying for at this time to a cost you can afford. You can apply again another time for more tools. By applying for less tools rather than waiting to raise a larger amount, you will not have to wait so long for the delivery of the tools you need.
What you need to know:
We will let you know that we have received your application.
You will then receive a phone call from our Zambia team to assess your application.
Following this we will tell you whether or not your application is successful.
We will then tell you when your tools will arrive, and where to collect them from.
After you have had your tools for one year, we will carry out an assessment to make sure you are using your tools as you agreed in your application.
